After reaching a settlement over a right-to-repair lawsuit with farmers in April, Deere & Co. is facing a new class action suit that alleges it also unfairly restricted repairs for its construction, lawn, and turf equipment. The case was brought by Christy Webber & Co., a landscaping operation in Chicago that services city landmarks like Soldier Field, Millennium Park and Navy Pier. The plaintiff alleged that Deere’s business practices have inflated repair costs and increased wait times since May 2022.

Farm equipment giant John Deere has agreed to pay $99 million and provide equipment owners with access to "repair resources" to vehicle owners to settle a class-action lawsuit over the company's repair practices.

Under a proposed settlement filed in federal court in the Northern District of Illinois, Deere would give farmers the ability to "diagnose and repair problems without having to use the services of an authorized dealer," according to a brief filed last week on behalf of farmer plaintiffs in the case. It called the action a "sea change" in the company's provision of repair tools.

Company officials said tariff-related expenses were already about $300 million midway through the year, with the final impact expected to roughly double that amount. Deere noted that these added costs are cutting into margins across its core agriculture, construction, and forestry equipment segments.

The chairman and CEO of Deere and Co., which has been the target of tariff threats by President-elect Donald Trump, on Thursday strongly defended his company’s record of manufacturing farm equipment in the United States and exporting it to other countries.

“We rely heavily on our highly skilled employees in the U.S.” to “design and build … the most technologically advanced equipment in the world. And as a result of that, greater than 75% of all products that we sell in the U.S. are assembled here in the U.S.," Deere Chairman and CEO John May said on the company's quarterly earnings call.
